No one is unfamiliar with the remarkable stallion Joost (Consul x Unblick xx), but his qualities are no coincidence, as his dam, Ulana descends from a strong Holsteiner bloodline, Stamm 242 although, in actuality, if we open the history books, it’s line 2825. To date, Ulana has produced three approved stallions, but we should also talk about her own dam.
Dam line 242 starts, according to the records, with the mare Ahne (1894: Iserlohn x Maik x Midas) – with Trakehner origins via Midas (1876). In combination with the stallion Rotbart (1902: Falb - Fregatte x Ethelbert) she gave the mare Ella, born in 1907. In 1981 Ella became the mother of Philippine (Rudolf), bred by Bendix Markmann. Ella gave two foals: The approved stallion Miltiades (1936: Mirza) and the mare Kunigunde (1935: First). The latter was registered in books that were maintained during WWII, but it was during that time that errors occurred – including the recording of bloodlines. And so it happened that line 2825 became line 424 with the mare Kunigunde. Thereafter, line 2825 bled to death while 424 became world famous!
Kunigunde subsequently produced two foals by the stallion Loretto (Lorbeer x Zerline x Erbherr), both fillies, one of them being Diastolchen; which is where Ulana’s success story begins.
Diastolchen’s legacy
Born in 1945, Diastolchen is the dam of approved stallions Laertes (Ladykiller xx) and Anklang (Anblick xx), neither of whom were acknowledged as being amazing sires, although Laertes did produce a few approved stallions, and some sport horses who jumped 1m30 and higher.
However, it was Dialstochen’s daughters that achieved greater acclaim. Out of the five mares she produced, three became highly influential in breeding. Her first mare, Ulana (Anblick xx), born in 1960, produced the approved Holsteiner stallions Joost (Consul), Colt (Cromwell), and Mannerheim (Rushing Water xx).
Her next famous daughter is Zypresse (1963) by Aldato (Anblick xx - Kreta x Heidelberg). Zypresse produced her own celebrated branch with approved stallions, state-premium mares, and numerous 1m50-1m60 jumping horses, such as Chienos, Roxette, Chamisso, Coster, Contano, Lady Macbeth DH, United Love HDC, Cinba, and Chiclana...
