It has been a busy number of weeks for representatives of the Irish Sport Horse Studbook in both showjumping and eventing, with two major competitions taking place in close succession, in Valkenswaard (NED) and Le Lion d’Angers (FRA).

The the last week in September saw the second edition of the WBFSH Studbooks Jumping Global Champions Trophy at the impressive Longines Tops International Arena in Valkenswaard, the Netherlands where the Irish Sport Horse Studbook was represented by no fewer than 24 entries across the various age-group categories: five-, six-, seven-, and eight-year-old horses.
It was a win for the Irish Sport Horse Studbook in the first qualifier of the eight year olds for Jack Ryan and DSH Lucky Junior on the opening day of competition, where 47 horses representing 10 different studbooks contested the this age-group division.

Bred and owned by Ryan’s uncle Seamus Drea in conjunction with the rider’s mother, Marguerite Ryan, the duo of man from Kilkenny and the grey gelding DSH Lucky Junior, sired by Ryan’s former ride and Nations’ Cup partner, BBS McGregor, stopped the clock in a time of 26.8 seconds to take the win.
It was a similar result in each of the six-year-old qualifiers with the combination of Sven Hadley and the Irish Sport Horse stallion Maximum Numero Too HSH taking the win on both occasions. This stallion is sired by Aganix du Seigneur (SBS) out of Couple Of Diamonds (ISH) by Numero Uno (KWPN) and bred by Eamon McArdle in Drumhowan Stud, Co. Monaghan.

Clear rounds from Irish Sport Horse Studbook riders Richard Kerins in both qualifiers with Realteens Orestus, as well as Gemma Phelan with GRC Casper, and Michael Pender with HHS Flonix meant the Irish Sport Horse Studbook were leading the six-year-old division going into the final where three riders were selected to ride in succession with no drop score.

The combined time of 208.79 seconds would have been good enough to take the win, however a rail down from each of the riders meant the 12-fault score left the Irish Sport Horse Studbook in fourth place, just off the podium.
A similar fate befell the Irish Sport Horse team in the eight-year-old final where the collective eight-fault score in a combined time of 204.75 seconds left the team of Jack Ryan and DSH Lucky Junior (ISH), Lt. Michaeli Byrne and Glendarragh (ISH), and Michael Pender with HHS Cyprus (ISH) also in fourth place... To read the complete article you need to be a subscriber
