Ermitage Kalone (Catoki - Bellaventure Kalone x Kannan) is causing quite a stir in Belgium under his rider Gilles Thomas. Similarly bred by Magali Dessalles, Prestige Kalone AA (Potter du Manaou AA - Blague du Maury AA x Veloce de Favi AA) jumped 1m60 with Philipp Rozier and is now owned and competing under the saddle of Danielle Lambert (CAN).

They both descend from a well-known Anglo Arab maternal line – in France known as the Yasmine AA damline. It is being said that this is one of the best Anglo Arab motherlines, built up with great emotion and passion.

Du Maury

With her ‘du Maury’ suffix, Renée-Laure Koch has notably been the best breeder of Anglo Arabs for the past three decades. Her success in pure-bred Arabian breeding for racing is world renowned, and she has also reshaped Anglo Arab stock descending from Yasmine AA (1967: Daninos AA - Sehaidane AA x Nid d’Or AA). In France, many of the stallions selected by the former Haras Nationaux (French National Studs) came from the same studfarm and the same maternal line – that of ‘de Maury’.
Renée-Laure Koch remembers fondly her early years with this line: “I was very young at the time of Sehaidane AA (1955: out of Desirée AA x l’Orient II AA) and Yasmine AA. I was in a riding school and my instructor had Sehaidane AA but had no place for his broodmares. He asked my parents if they were interested in taking Sehaidane AA, and they said ‘okay’. They arranged that Sehaidane AA would produce one foal for us and one foal for her owner. I think that Sehaidane AA was 14 years old when she came to our place, and I have great memories of her. She had blood but with a good temperament. She was dark bay. In this exchange of goodwill, Sehaidane AA gave birth to several winners but also and above all to Yasmine AA, who was bred by Edmond Berthelot. An early and fairly common mare, Sehaidane AA jumped very well herself for balance and movement. Sehaidane AA’s sire was Nid d'Or AA, himself a serious winner on the flat. He was a good sire of sport and, in particular, cross-country horses.”
The following information comes from an article about Yasmine AA, written by Adrian Cugnasse: “His pedigree was exceptional. Daninos’ dam, Dalila IX, came from an exceptional Arabian strain: that of Dragonne (Warda family, imported in 1833), a full sister to Dragée from the Lestorte studfarm (granddam of Djerba Oua and great cross-country winners). Although he produced several good winners in sport, his [Thoroughbred] sire Samaritain xx was above all a sire of showjumpers (twice topping the French stallion list). This stayer (Prix Royal Oak over 3,100 metres) was placed over the classic distance (fourth in the Jockey Club). Small in stature (1m60), with questionable underpinnings, he twice won the Finot at Auteuil. Over 2,400 metres he was beaten in the Prix Prince d'Orange (Group III) by his future stallion neighbour at the Haras de Pau, Micipsa. This stallion, owned by Mr. Boussac, is one of the cornerstones of the Anglo-Arabian Stud-Book, both in sport and in racing, each time producing outstanding performers (his offspring have won 500 races) and sires. Even in showjumping, although he was never used for this purpose.
“A uterine brother of a Saint Leger winner, Micipsa was expressive, racy, and well-framed. Standing at 1m63, he had magnificent gaits. The mixture of Samaritain and Micipsa’s blood was explosive and allowed the south-westerner to win the most beautiful races at Auteuil.”.. To read the complete article you need to be a subscriber
