The 2021 NZ National Young Horse Show was a triumph for identical twin sisters Wendy and Robin Jacobs and their very successful Double J Stud. The five-year-old championship was won by Double J Larrikin, sired by their homebred stallion Double J Repicharge, and the twins themselves were the winners of the Breeders Cup, an award presented for the first time this year.

A number of other Double J horses, most sired by JJ Repicharge (Voltaire II - Replica x Oregan xx), had very high placings.
The Jacobs sisters, and Wendy Jacobs’ two daughters Kim and Sam Carrington, do all the work at the stud, including the breaking-in and handling. “This prize means a lot, as breeding horses is no easy feat,” says Wendy Jacobs. “We are super happy with our young horses at the moment, and even more with the young ones in the paddock. To win this makes you feel you have made it.” Double J Stud is in Takapau, Central Hawke’s Bay. It has been the leading stud before now, but this is the first year a prize has been awarded.

Holsteiner mare wins 7yo title

This win went to the Holsteiner mare LT Holst Freda (Colman - LT Holst Andrea x Casall), who completed the only double clear in the final class and, in fact, jumped faultlessly throughout the three days of competition. LTH Freda was also the winner of the style prize – and is a very good-looking young horse. She was bred by Ewen Mackintosh of Lake Taupo Holsteiners, and is owned and ridden by Julie Davey. Her imported dam LTH Andrea (Casall - Palaune x Lavaletto) competes at the highest levels of jumping here, was the 2020 Olympic Cup winner, and is still the reigning NZ Horse of the Year as no competition was held in 2021. Andrea was bred by Hans-Joachim and Dörte Gerken of Hammoor in Germany, and is from Holsteiner Stamm 2067. Freda has a half-sister by Clinton, LT Holst Elizabeth, who is now based at Cian O’Connor’s Karlswood Stables in Ireland with Annabel Francis. LT Holst Freda finished fourth in her six-year-old championship last year. She was five-year-old champion in 2019, and was a real standout as a four-year-old: the only horse of her age to finish three days of jumping at the 2018 championships without a single fault.
One of the two horses who finished equal second to LTH Freda this year, Bannockburn ECPH (Cassiano - Ngahiwi Emilionaire x Emilion VDL pref.), was also runner-up to her in the five-year-old championship in 2019, and in the 2018 four-year-old championship. This talented Warmblood gelding was bred by Nikki and Jenny Booth at East Coast Performance Horses. His dam, Ngahiwi Emilionaire, was the six-year-old Horse of the Year in 2012, but had to retire from competition following an injury. She was bred by Bruce Holden at Ngahiwi Station and is now an important member of the ECPH broodmare band. Bannockburn ECPH is owned and ridden by Jeremy Whale...
