The Polish equestrian world is mourning the death of Jan Kowalczyk, the Olympic showjumping champion who passed away yesterday, Monday, February 24, at the age of 78. The 11-time champion of Poland was a great horseman, a coach, a soldier, who won over 600 competitions in his lifetime. His biggest sporting success, however, came at the Moscow 1980 Olympic Games when he won individual gold riding his favourite partner, Artemor xo (Eros - Artemiza x Equator), bred by the Janow Podlaski Stud. This victory amounted to the greatest success in the history of Polish equestrian sport that has never been surpassed. A.G. (Photo: Dava Palej)
