The talented mares of Ewen Mackintosh’s Lake Taupo Holsteiners (LT Holst) have made a big impact on the NZ jumping scene over the last few years, and have begun the 2019-20 season in flying form. Two of their top names, the stud-owned LT Holst Andrea (Casall - Palaune x Lavaletto) and Robert Steele’s LT Holst Bernadette (Askari - Tamara XVI x Casall), have opened their campaigns with Grand Prix wins. Both mares are now 11 years old.
Andrea, who is ridden and part-owned by Brooke Edgecombe, won the final leg of the World Cup series here last summer, was the season’s leading mare for the second year in succession, and has looked consistently good at every stage of her career. She was bred in Germany by Hans-Joachim Gerken of Hammoor, and is from Stamm 2067.
Her new Grand Prix victory was at the Pukahu Show, with second place going to the NZ Sport Horse gelding Mandalay Cove (Wishing Well - Milly Matrix x Festal), bred, owned and ridden by Maurice Beatson. Another NZSH gelding, Maddox Letino (Littorio - Allgems xx x Grosvenor xx), bred by Laura Knight and owned/ridden by Emma Watson was third. In fourth place was an imported 10-year-old BWP mare, Joligne de Carmel (Vagabond de la Pomme - PM van de Helle x Calando I) owned by Matilda Shotter-Davies, ridden by Julie Davey and bred in Belgium by Dirk Willaert of Moerzeke.
Be Mine NZPH (Untouchable M - Xena NZPH x Cacao Courcelle), bred by New Zealand Performance Horses and owned and ridden by Duncan McFarlane was fifth, and Centaur (Eurosport Centavos - Santaurian xx x San Louis xx) Daniel Webb by Emily Gray, owned by Daniel Webb was sixth. Both these geldings are New Zealand Sport Horses.
Incidentally, three of LT Holst Andrea’s daughters were competing (though not against her!) at Pukahu: The seven-year-old Elizabeth (Clinton) and two five-year-olds by Colman, LT Holst Freda and LT Holst Francis. These two were a double flush, and Freda has already had a major win: the four-year-old championship at last year’s young horse show. She added to that record at Pukahu by winning the five-year-old series class (see below). Francis, on the other hand, has been busy with a daughter of her own, a filly by Emerald (Diamant de Semilly - Carthina Z x Carthago), and is really just beginning her career.
LT Holst Bernadette’s win was at Feilding, one week later. This mare was imported by Ewen Mackintosh at the same time as Andrea, and now belongs to her rider, Robert Steele. She was bred by Reimer and Detlef Hennings of Bendorf, and was out of action last season with an injury. She had plenty of top placings prior to that, including a Grand Prix win, and finished eighth overall in 2015’s extremely competitive seven-year-old age-group series. She also had a win in her six-year-old group, in which she competed only three times...To read the complete article you need to be a subscriber
