It was a day that many breeders had been looking forward to for several weeks: At the R+V Holstein State Foal Championship, the winners were chosen in three classifications, from the best foals at the registration dates in the individual licensing districts. In the end, it was the daughters and sons of Dinken, Cahil and For Romance who particularly impressed the trio of judges.
Henrik Klatte, Matthias Wittke and Marten Witt assessed the foals, which were divided into fillies, colts, and dressage-focused foals, competing for victory and placings. The filly category was won by a daughter of the association stallion Dinken from a Uriko mother (line 3401), bred by Björn Boysen from Struckum. She had already become the winner in her licensing district in North Friesland and was able to confirm this impression in the state championships. “This foal is very self-confident and rightly so,” commented Matthias Wittke on behalf of the jury. “She scores points with her super relaxed, light-as-a-feather movements – a truly successful pairing.”
In second place was a daughter of Cahil, also stationed in Elmshorn, out of a Caretino dam. Hobe Magens from Ottenbüttel (licensing district in Steinburg) brought this aspirant from the famous Bühne line 8769 to the championship. “A large-framed foal that leaves little to be desired and, secured through this outstanding line, will hopefully remain in the Holstein breeding program,” said judge Wittke.
The best three fillies were completed by a mare by Uriko, again a daughter of an association stallion. Her mother by Colman represents the Wodka II family and thus the 1916 line, which Boie Behrens maintains in Volsemenhusen (Dithmarschen licensing district). “An extremely typical foal with a lot of thrust from the hindquarters,” said Matthias Wittke.

Two is better than one...

Bernd Börger from St. Michaelisdonn (Dithmarschen licensing district) has known for some time that the pairing of his Clarcon x Aljano mare (line 306) with Cahil is an excellent fit: In 2022, he presented the state champion colt with the full brother of this year’s winner. The judges saw it that way too and recognized the black-brown as a foal “that moves very well and we can be excited to see where his future will take him,” as Marten Witt predicted.
Second place went to a stallion candidate by Esmeraldo x Cormint (line 741), bred by Hans-Joachim Gerken from Hammoor (Stormarn-Lauenburg licensing district). Judge Marten Witt particularly highlighted the colt’s captivating charisma and his movement qualities. The Magens family from Ottenbüttel secured bronze in this championship with their foal by Duplexx x Cachas (line 8769). “This foal presented itself as a very typical and highly interesting stallion candidate,” Witt noted...
