Riviera: A broodmare whose offspring are bred to perform

Only three times has a SWB-bred horse been on the podium at the dressage World Breeding Championshjips for Young Horses.The first time was in 1999 when Minna Telde and the approved stallion Maistic 941 won a bronze medal in the six-year-old class.

The second time was in 2016 when Jeanna Högberg guided the then seven-year-old Fiorucci Ht to a silver medal. And most recently in September, when the same rider won a bronze medal in the five-year-old class in Ermelo with Severucci Ht, half-brother to Fiorucci Ht, out of the mare Riviera, bred by Gabriella Grewin Bramberg/Absolut Dental AB. “It’s been an incredible year,” says Gabriella proudly about the successes as both breeder and owner.
It all started in the 1990s when Gabriella bought the Holsteiner mare Bessie from Germany. The purchase was a coincidence, but it turned out to be a stroke of luck. Bessie would later become the dam of two elite mares and the granddam of, so far, two Grand Prix horses and three S-level dressage horses. “She was a lovely horse,” recalls Gabriella. “She was nice to look at but also had a great walk and enormous trot extensions. I bought her to ride, and we even competed in Prix St. Georges dressage.”
Unfortunately, Bessie developed laminitis, leading to Gabriella’s interest in breeding, and Bessie produced five offspring. The eldest daughter, Camprionessa, achieved elite status in 2014, and among her offspring is the approved stallion Wellington 1229, who also competed internationally in dressage with placings up to Grand Prix level. In addition, Bessie produced Al Pacino, who received a premium in dressage, and Blitz Kan Ht and Zaragoza Ht, who competed in M-level C dressage. And then there’s Riviera...
