THE NETHERLANDS (by Claartje van Andel) The well-known Brabanthallenin’s-Hertogenboschtraditionally hosts the annual KWPN Stallion Show. At this largest stallion show in Europe, two fantastic champions were crowned, while a sold-out house of very enthusiastic and knowledgeable spectators enjoyed every minute of all the presentations: young stallions, older sires, entertainment, competition finals.... In the end it was a Cornet Obolensky son, Kannan Jr in showjumping and Governor descendant, Kremlin MD, for dressage.

The two champions were athletically well-bred. Kannan Jr (Cornet Obolensky-Van Metaster sport-spr PROK x Quick Star [SF]) was bred by Wobbe and Marietje Kramer and co-owner Sjaak van der Lei, while Kremlin MD (Governor - Faresia ster PROK x Rousseau) was bred by Marjo Dinnissen and owned by Gabrielle and Louis Röst. No fewer than 46 stallions were selected and invited to participate in the 70-day stallion selection (this spring) or 50-day test in the autumn, decided by their owners. After the result were announced, Wout-Jan van der Schans, a member of the stallion selection committee for jumping, and also involved in the stallion test, was a de- lighted man, saying: “We are most happy that we have been able to chose so many stallions from proven sport- ing dam lines. This started al- ready last year. Now we’ve been able to have the sport- ing standards high in the pedigrees of the mares once again. This is the future. I call this ‘making big steps’ by this promising result.”

Seven stallions were invited to the championships round in which Kannan Jr was simply the best without any doubt. His desirable pedigree with impressive ancestral sporting results, his conformation and his own jumping talent, left no wish unfullfilled. “This well-developed stallion jumped convincingly in both the first and second-round displaying lots of power. A genetic masterpiece – a product of the top progenitors Cornet Obolen- sky and Quick Star, a son of the 1m45m jumper mare Van Meta, and grandson to the full sister of superb stallion Kannan,” said an enthusiastic chairman of the selection committee jumper stallions Cor Loeffen.

The Voltaire-son Kannan was also born in the stables of Wobbe and Marietje Kramer from Oud-Beijerland, in 1992, out of their mare Cer- neta pref prest elite (Nimmerdor x Le Mexico keur). Now the legacy of the long-legged and elegant Kannan, a former best stallion of the WBFSH and father of the London 2012 Olympic champion Nino des Buissonnets with Steve Guerdat, will continue with Kannan Jr. The Kramer couple again chose the name Kannan, emulating the name of the Indian child they fostered.

Three more Cornet Obolensky sons also received an invitation for the stallion test. Furthermore the VDL Stud was extremely happy with the volume of sons originating from VDL stallions: Grand Slam VDL (2011: Cardento - Wonder AS x Heartbreaker), four invitations, Carrera VDL (2006: Cardento - Vantiels Esprit x Baloubet du Rouet), Glenfiddich VDL (2011: Baacardi VDL - Tolivi VDL x Corrado I), Baltic VDL (2006: Quaprice Bois Margot - Nellandra x Jus de Pomme) and, of course, Harley VDL (Heartbreaker - Larthago x Carthago), with the latter two appearing in the champions’ circle...
