World Breeding News began its auction results service in 2019. Since then we have recorded around 40,000 individual sales, with lots sired by 3,700 different stallions, from 1,400 separate sales events.

It should be noted however, that all the statistics and figures mentioned are from auction results that have been provided to us or are publicly available. There are many more sales where the auction houses choose not to publish any of their results for undisclosed reasons. One event told us it was to preserve the anonymity of its buyers and the prices even though it was a ‘live’ and publicly attended event.

Constants and changes

Throughout the past eight years we have seen certain aspects remain constant, while others have shown dramatic changes. The major constant, however, is that just three stallions have dominated the auction landscae in terms of sales values:

• Chacco-Blue (1998: Chambertin [Holst] - Contata [Meckl] x Contender [Holst] – bred by K-H Koepp) has sired 1,004 sales offsprig for a total value of €27,931,000)

•Cornet Obolensky/ex Windows vh Costersveld (1999: Clinton [BWP] - Rabanna van Costersveld [BWP]x Heartbreaker [KWPN] – bred by Thierry Degraeve) sired 950 sales offspring for a total value of €25,603,000

• Chacoon Blue† (2009: Chacco-Blue [Meckl] - Cindina [OS] x Cartoon [Oldbg] – bred by Paul Schockemöhle/Gestüt Lewitz) sired 526 sales offspring for a total value of €20,026,000

In terms of value of sales there is then a big drop to the next stallion, Diamant de Semilly† (1991: Le Tôt de Semilly [SF] - Venise des Cresles [SF] x Elf III [SF] – bred by Jules Mesnildrey) with 586 sales, but a total sales value of €14,508,000 (avg €24,758)...
