The Friesian horse is undisputedly at the top in terms of its good-natured, reliable, and intelligent character, says Marc Peter Spahn, Grand Prix rider and breeding board member. “When measured against other breeds, this is our highest asset.”

It therefore deserves in breeding to focus on maintaining this ideal character; “For all horse lovers, users, breeders, para-sporters as well as top athletes.”
The majority of Friesian horses do indeed possess that prized golden character, agrees Peter Spahn. “However, as recent years have shown, this character can sometimes be affected, resulting in horses that are less compliant.” He stresses the importance of keeping the character pure for the future.
However, his views on the character of the Friesian horse receive mixed reactions. Some acknowledge and are inspired by his point of view, while others downplay it. Critics often claim that all Friesian horses have naturally good character and see his concerns as unfounded. While most Friesian horses do indeed have excellent character, Peter stresses the need to actively protect this unique characteristic as it sets them apart from other breeds.
Comparing the Friesian breed to the gaits of KWPN horses or the stamina of English Thoroughbreds is ambitious. As Peter explains; “Right now, we need to focus and prove ourselves on the market with what the Friesian horse is best at: the golden character. This allows us to push our boundaries and we are no longer limited to the other qualities. Precisely because of this, we are even able to perform handsomely in the (top) sport,” It is clear that this ideal, easy-going, friendly, and intelligent character is also loved by recreational riders and beginners...
