He has arrived at the very top of the international showjumping scene: the Holsteiner Verband stallion Zuccero HV (Zirocco Blue x Caretino) under the saddle of brilliant Swedish showjumper Rolf-Göran Bengtsson.
At his Word Cup premiere in Leipzig in mid-January, the reigning European team champion of Milan demonstrated brilliant form, jumping clear throughout and finishing sixth in the Grand Prix on Sunday with his Swedish rider Rolf-Göran Bengtsson. Moreover, he is often referred to as a “natural jumper” – Zuccero being one of the very few horses who perform in the showjumping arena without hind leg protection. “His jumping quality is exceptional, he is as special for the way he jumps, his trajectory and his ability, as for his courage, his natural carefulness and his excellent sport horse attitude,” Rolf-Göran Bengtsson says about Zuccero’s merits.
This son of Zirocco Blue was born at Hanno Köhncke’s in Badendorf just outside the Hanseatic city of Lübeck. For decades, the Köhncke family farm has been involved with Holsteiner breeding on a high level – producing sport and stud icons such as three-time Derby winner Collin by Contender (Toni Hassmann) or the impressive Chin Chin by Constant. Zuccero comes from the very same dam line, stamm 4539.
Zuccero is now 12 years old, and in addition to his own outstanding sporting achievements his offspring are attracting more and more attention, as well. Take for example five-year-old Zuccarello (out of a dam by Uriko), another licensed Verband stallion, whose second dam, Shamrock I (Canturo), is a broodmare of note, with her produce including the 1m60- level jumping horses Crunch by Clarimo (Rolf-Göran Bengtsson/SWE) and Dito by Diarado (Dennis Lynch/IRL).
