The 2022 Irish Sport Horse stallion selections took place in Cavan Equestrian Centre on March 23/24. A total of 21 stallions were presented for studbook selection, including both Warmblood and Irish Sport Horse stallions. It was the first time since 2019 that spectators were welcomed back to view studbook selections of the presenting stallions.

The first, Zapatero VDL (KWPN) (2004: Chin Chin [Holst] - Manieta [KWPN] x Ircolando [KWPN]) was presented by Drumhowan Stud. Based on his own performance and that of both his showjumping and eventing offspring, Zapatero VDL was awarded a 3* Own Performance (OP) showjumping (SJ) merit, and a 4* Progeny Performance (PP) SJ, plus 4* eventing (EV) PP merit.
Zapatero VDL of course being no stranger to the Irish showjumping community, this stallion competed under the saddle of Ireland’s former top-ranked rider Jessica Kürten. Together they represented Ireland at CSI5* level at shows such as Paris, La Coruña, Zurich, and Basel.
Some of his top-performing showjumping progeny include the KWPN gelding H5 Zapzerap (out of Niloma x Ramiro Z, bred by Baas, Baas-Gritter and Harkema) currently being competed by Swiss Olympian Pius Schwizer; Dyango VDL (KWPN: Pretty x Ahorn, bred by S. and J.E. Wolters) for Dutch Olympian Jur Vreiling; Gamira (KWPN: Wamira M x Quidam de Revel [SF], bred by Veehandel Musterd) with Hendrik-Jan Schuttert, also representing the Netherlands; and Magic Mike (KWPN: Zivola x Indoctro [Holst], bred by J.H. Koers) for American Kyle King.
In the sport of eventing, Zaperatro VDL (KWPN) is represented by Deniro Z (KWPN: Zonne-Trend x French Buffet xx, bred by J. Zilverberg) for American Elizabeth Halliday-Sharp; and Irish Sport Horse stallion Monbeg Senna (out of Brooklyn Breeze x Fortunus [Hann]) with fellow American rider Katherine Coleman.

Finnegan D

Second was Finnegan D (KWPN: Singapore [Holst] - C [Holst] x Cassini I [Holst], bred by F.J. Deckers in the Netherlands) presented by Derryglen Stud. Finnegan D (KWPN) is a son of Holsteiner Eurocommerce Singapore, currently competing with Irish rider Deirdre Reilly for the Derryglen Stud in Co. Meath. He was previously campaigned by Great Britain’s Chloe Winchester and Carron Nicol.
His dam, the Holsteiner mare C (Cassini 1) is from the same family as the Holsteiner showjumpers: Latigo 18 (Lasino - R-Cendra x Contender) with German rider Petra Ruder; Erato M (Cardento - Nadia x Corrado I) for American rider Carlo Graziani; and Lionell 19 (Limbus - O-Alcantara x Alcatraz) for Syria’s Zayd Kuzbari. (Latigo 18 and Lionell 19 were both bred by Lüneburg ZG/J. and K. Hetlingen.) Based on his own showjumping performance, Finnegan D was awarded a 3* OP SJ merit, and his first foals are due in Ireland in 2022... To read the complete article you need to be a subscriber
