The various ESNZ jumping series are now well under way, and the closest battle at present is among the five-year-olds, where a mere two points separate the top two horses, with six others sharing third place six points behind them. And it’s not only the scores that are close: there are several close family connections among the top eight as well.

Unusually for New Zealand the leader of the five-year-old group is a stallion: Double J Typhoon (Euro Sport Centavos - Double J Breeze x Voltaire II), bred by twin sisters Robyn and Wendy Jacobs at their increasingly successful Double J Stud. JJ Typhoon, a New Zealand Sport Horse, is ridden by Wendy’s daughter, young Kimberley Carrington, and is owned by Wendy Jacobs. Although he’s dark bay and still developing, Typhoon bears a definite resemblance to his outstanding imported Hanoverian sire, the jet-black ES Centavos (Escudo - Annabell StPrSt x Argentinus). Centavos, was New Zealand’s Horse of the Year in 2015, and is playing a huge role as a jumping sire here. He was bred in Germany by Heinz Schuette, from Stamm 4191603, Schridde 261.
Double J Typhoon’s dam, JJ Breeze, had five-year-old series wins herself in 2004. She is by another super-successful import, the KWPN Voltaire II (Voltaire - Daydyne x Nimmerdor), of Fokfamilie 1602. Her dam is a Thoroughbred mare, French Kiss xx (Take A Risk xx).
JJ Breeze’s other very good progeny include the mare JJ Breeze On, who finished third in her seven-year-old championship, and Breeze On’s full brother, JJ Hurricane – who just happens to be the current leader of the six-year-old series, and won his five-year-old series! Both of these are by the Westfalian, Euro Sport Heartbreaker (Heartbreaker x Hamlet x Ramiro Z), who is now in Australia.
Snapping at Double J Typhoon’s heels is a lovely Hanoverian mare, Giulia MH (Graf Top - Ma Mojo Pedale xx x Grosvenor xx), who was bred by Judith Matthews at Matthews Hanoverians, is owned by Angela Miller, and ridden by Melody Matheson. Giulia’s dam was bred by D.J. Gordon and has several interesting progeny, including an exciting 2018 son by Cornet Obolensky, Copyright MH, and a full sister to Giulia, Grenadine MH.
Among the six horses who share third place at the time of writing is another from Double J Stud, JJ Graduate (Double J Repicharge - Sara Jane x Chico D’Oro), a gelding owned by Lara Baker and ridden by Ike Baker. His sire, Double J Repicharge (Voltaire II - Replica x Oregan) the Jacobs sisters’ home-bred stallion, has a growing list of impressive performers, including full brothers Double J Bouncer and Double J Barman. His dam, Replica, jumped at World Cup level here... To read the complete article you need to be a subscriber
