NEW ZEALAND (by Sally Reid) The final event of the New Zealand jumping season, the Glistening Waters Championships in Masterton, brought the age-group series to a close, and also saw the announcement of the leading mare, leading stallion, and best eight-year-old awards. These are not contested as classes, but are decided on points accumulated.

The worthy recipient of the ‘leading mare’ award was an imported Holsteiner daughter of Casall, the consistently good LT Holst Andrea (Casall Ask - Palaune x Lavaletto). She was bred by Hans-Joachim Gerken of Hammoor.

Andrea was brought to New Zealand by Ewen McIntosh, a fairly new breeder on the scene here, but one who is making a name for himself with a small and super band of young horses. The mare was in foal to Quinton I when she arrived, and that foal, named LT Holst Elizabeth, is now a winning five- year-old. Two embryos of Elizabeth’s are being carried at the moment, and both are seriously exciting prospects: one by the preferent stallion VDL Harley and the other by Olympic gold-medal winner, Big Star. Andrea is now nine years old, and is jointly owned by her rider, Brooke Edgecombe, and Ewen McIntosh.

Leading stallion

This went to the handsome chestnut Eros K (Guidam - Duchess de la Bryere x Cavalier), a 12-year-old Irish Sport Horse, bred by Knightfield Stud in Ireland. Eros’s dam showjumped for that coun- try at Nations’ Cup level, and his sire, the exceptional Guidam (Quidam de Revel) left more than 30 international champions, including Beezie Madden’s Authentic.

Eros K was imported to New Zealand as a four-year-old by Josh Barker, who competed him up to World Cup level. He now belongs to the Whittaker family and is ridden by teenager Steffi Whittaker, recording premier league and Grand Prix wins.

Premier League

This was another top title for the powerful nine-year-old Indoctro gelding, Veroana (Indoctro - Strawberry x Ramon Off), and Briar Burnett-Grant, who won both the final class and the series with 133 points. Veroana also won the Olympic Cup (Horse of the Year) in March, and is a Dutch Warmblood/NZ Stationbred cross.

The World Cup NZ winner, My Super Nova (Corlando - Grace x sire unrecorded) a homebred 12-year-old Holsteiner-NZ Stationbred cross, has been out with an injur y and did not contest Horse of the Year (HOY) in March or this final show, but finished second in this league with 124 points for Rose Alfeld. Third was the Thoroughbred, AP Ninja xx (AP Ruler xx - Office Affair xx x Secre- tariat xx), ahead of the fourth-placed Selle Français, Biarritz (Lindberg des Hayettes - Veracruz x Drum- mer Boy), bred by Cypress Point Stables. Fifth went to the Hanoverian mare, Graffiti MH, bred by Judith Matthews of Matthews Hanoverians – this very exciting horse also won the 2018 eight-year-old title (see below). In sixth place was the season’s aforementioned leading mare, LT Holst Andrea...
