BN is very sad to report that in the early hours of January 16, one of the best known former Swiss showjumpers passed away at the age of 64. The father of three and grandfather of one, has been in a coma since suffering a serious stroke on December 13. Together with the unforgettable grey giant Calvaro V (Cantus - Valetta VI x Merano), bred by Ilse Hell from Klein Offenseth in Germany, Melliger was instantly recognizable when he entered the world’s arenas, winning two Olympic silvers (individual in Atlanta 1996 and team in Sydney 2000), as well as 13 European championship medals, including four gold. Melliger retired from sport in 2010, but his career continued as a coach for young riders and juniors until 2016. Switzerland has lost one of their greatest horsemen who wrote himself into the history books as their most successful European championship rider. Our sincerest condolences go to Willi’s family members:- Sonja Grob
