Grateful thanks to Fernando Gil of Haras Santa Monica in Chile for providing the following table that shows well-known sires with offspring competing at last month’s showjumping World Breeding Championship for Young Horses in Lanaken, Belgium. Although the table only includes sires whose semen is distributed by Haras Santa Monica, it provides interesting reading as the statistics relate to some of the world’s best known showjumping sires. In total, for 5yo, 6yo and 7yo, the represented stallions total 11.89%, 12.60% and 14.81%, respectively, of the number of participants – significant percentages given the number of stallions currently available in Europe.

With its state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, Haras Santa Monica adheres to the highest level of reproductive technology in Chile and last week organized a course for veterinarians presented by Dr. Marcelo Miragaya DVM, M.Sc., Ph.D.  Dr. Miragaya is a reproductive specialist with the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences at the University of Buenos Aires in Argentina, and a visiting academic with programs in the United States, Chile, Peru, Colombia and Spain. He has authored numerous scientific publications and books relating to his reproductive specialities. Alongside Dr. Miragaya, visiting veterinarians and laboratory staff of Haras Santa Monica addressed the issues of freezing and the manipulation of frozen semen, in addition to the latest Insemination techniques.
