European Showjumping Championships, Mannheim, August 1997, Bert Romp (NED) riding Burg's Mr. Blue

A consummate horseman, highly respected jumping coach, and former chef d'equipe, Bert Romp tragically died today in hospital in Tilburg from a head injury sustained while loading a horse yesterday. Romp was a stalwart of the Dutch team for many years, including two Olympic appearances in Barcelona 1992 and Atlanta 1996, respectively riding Waldo and Samantha. However, perhaps his best-remembered partnership was with the great grey Mr. Blue: 11th at 1997 European championships in Mannheim, and 10th one year later in the Helsinki World Cup Final. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very sad time. (Photo Peter Llewellyn)
