Regina Z retires from competition to continue as broodmare

Regina Z

At the age of 16 and following a fabulous international showjumping career under the saddle of Harrie Smolders (NED), Regina Z (Rex Z - Just a Dream x Savoy Hanover) will enjoy a well-earned retirement from sport. The Zangersheide-bred mare carries a pedigree that is far from traditional in terms of today’s modern sport horses, as her dam line is 100 percent Trotter! However, she descends from one of the most blue-blooded sire lines that saw León Melchior controversially breed full siblings Rebel I Z and Olympic silver medallist (Barcelona 1992) Ratina Z – to produce Regina’s sire Rex Z. During her own successful international career, Regina carried Smolders to two World Cup finals, four-star Grand Prix victories in Shanghai and Toronto , as well as a Nations’ Cup win in Rome. Smolders paid tribute to Regina on his FB page, recounting their many years as a competitive partnership, overcoming early difficulties due to the mare's sensitive personality, and confirming that she will now begin a new chapter in her life as a broodmare. www.studforlife.com
