A magnificent win for sexagenarian John Whitaker and Argento (Arko III - Flora May x Gasper) yesterday in the Longines Grand Prix of the Athina Onassis Horse Show in St. Tropez, France. Many of the world’s top riders gathered in this South of France playground, but it was Whitaker’s speed and experience that steered the 14-year-old AES stallion to victory and the winner’s purse of 132,000 euros (US$150,000). Argento was bred by Keeley Durham and is co-owned by John Whitaker and his wife,Claire.
It was, in fact, a clean sweep for podium places for stallions, with Taloubet Z (Galoubet A x Polydor) and Qlassic Bois Margot (Arc de Triomphe x Galoubet A) claiming second and third with Christmas Ahlmann (GER) and Simon Delestre (FRA), respectively. It shouldn’t go unnoticed that the bloodline of Galoubet A played a significant role with a son and grandson in the top places.
