The Selle Français gelding Espoir de la Mare (What A Joy xx - Touraine du Fresne x Ukase) carried French international eventing rider Jean Teulere to world championship team gold at the 2002 World Equestrian games in Jerez de la Frontera (ESP), and two years later won a second team gold at the Athens 2004 Olympic games, where they finished fourth individually. Bred by Raymond Courdel, Espoir de la Mare was the first offspring of Touraine du Fresne, crossed with the Thoroughbred What A Joy. The foal was sold to Jacky Renou, then passed into the hands of Bertrand Guichardière before finally being sold to Christophe Dubois who gave the horse to Jean Teulere until his retirement in 2013 at the grand age of 21. Touraine – a paternal granddaughter of the great Ibrahim – produced nine foals overall. Espoir de la Mare achieved a Selle Français performance aptitude high of ICC185 (0.78) in 2007, with a genetic indicator rated at +20 for eventing.
