Top-priced foal, Ela Alice – a colt by Eldorado van de Zeshoek (2004/BWP: Clinton x Toulon)

Sold for €21,000, Ela Alice, a colt by Eldorado van de Zeshoek topped the price ranking at the 'Shooting Stars' foal auction in Viernheim over the weekend. Out of DSP Cinsablume (Cinsey [Hann] x Contendro I [Holst]), he is a paternal grandson of Holsteiner Clinton (Corrado I), and descended from Toulon [BWP] via his sire's dam, Bijou Orai. Following a thrilling bidding duel, a jumping stable in Westfalia secured the purchase of this exciting prospect by telephone. Bred by Ralf Mews, he was exhibited by Fabian Hennicke.

Dam lines were also crucial in the purchase of dressage foals, with Thomas Casper from the Birkhof Stud in Donzdorf securing Dr. Darling (Danone I [Hann] - Fraulein Fröhlich x Lord Leopold) for €16m500.  The pedigree of this fleet-footed son of Danone I (De Niro) is descended via his dam's sire from Lord Sinclair I, while his sire's dam is by Weltmeyer. Meanwhile, Dr. Darling's dam, Fraulein Fröhlich is a full sister to Bundeschampionat finalist Lorena, who has herself already produced a foal for Thomas Casper. There is a history for the Birkhof stud with these bloodlines, including Fraulein Fröhlich's dam's sire, Royaldik [Oldbg] – an advanced eventing stallion. Dr. Darling was bred by Elisabeth and Stefan Heimpel.

Illustrating the success of this auction, the average price rose by over €1,000, from €7,727 to €8,776. Six foals sold in excess of €10,000. Auctioneer Hendrik Schulze Rückamp skilfully staged several bidding duels that generated an exciting on-site experience for his audience. "This year we made the Viernheim collection more international, for which our customers thanked us. Many foals will be going to high-class jumping stables and will have the best opportunity to progress their careers".
