European Championship team medallists from Gothenburg: gold to Ireland, silver for Sweden, Switzerland on the podium with bronze. Both Ireland and Switzerland pulled out stellar performances – each with only three team members and no discard score. The three Irish team horses were all stallions: Chaqui Z (Chacco-Blue - Quilina Z x Quinar – bred by Morsink de Lutte) ridden by Shane Sweetnam (0/0); All Star 5 (Argentinus - April Love ZH x Almé – bred by Horst Zöllmer) with Denis Lynch (4/0); and Good Luck (Canturo - Famosa Z x Furioso II – bred by Dirk Geerinckx) under the saddle of Cian O’Connor (4/0) – representing Zangersheide, Hanoverian and Belgian Warmblood studbooks, respectively. Not an Irish horse among them! There was certainly diversity in studbooks within these three teams: Swedish Warmblood heading the field with three representatives, Westfalian (2), and one apiece for Selle Français, sBs, Zangersheide, Hanoverian and BWP. As far as the current leading studbook in the WBFSH rankings are concerned, you had to go to the fourth horse in the fifth-placed German team – to find a Holsteiner: LB Convall (Colman) ridden by Philipp Weishaupt. A full bloodline analysis of the team and individual European Championships will appear in the October issue of Breeding News for Sport Horses.
